Pollena Trocchia
An ancient center 10 km SE of Naples, at the foot of Monte Somma and within the zone of country villas struck by the eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79. There are remains of a wine cellar and some marble statues, among which is a statue of Dionysus (Naples, Museo Nazionale, n. 152871). The few definite discoveries do not, however, permit a certain appraisal of the character of the ancient center. A decorated column base of the middle of the 1st c. A.D. in the parish church is noteworthy. Santangelo maintained at Pollena a villa where many Roman marble copies of Greek works were kept, among which was a statue of a draped female figure, the so-called Spinner of Munich and a statue of Apollo now in the Castello Vigilulfo in Milan.
